WHAT ARE VEGAN COSMETICS?

Generally, Vegan cosmetics refer to those that don't contain any animal-derived ingredients, and Cruelty-Free products are those not tested on animals. Shouldn't they just both mean no animals were involved at any stage? I think so.

Some cosmetic companies use animals as ingredients and/or test the products on the animals in the development stage. Sadly, this causes a great deal of suffering for millions of animals.

THE BUNNY LOGO'S AND WHAT THEY MEAN

The good news is that there are more and more companies moving away from animal testing and the use of them as ingredients. And there are organizations that certify products vegan and cruelty-free to make it easier for you and me to quickly identify cosemtics that align with our values.

You may have seen bunny logos on cosmetics and wondered what it meant. Unfortuantely, not all bunny logos mean the same thing. The Ethical Elephant has created an easy to follow comparison of the 3 most common logos:

LAWS REGARDING ANIMAL TESTING
As more people are demanding cruelty-free cosmetics, many governments are implementing laws banning the testing on animals.
In March 2013, a new European Union (EU) law was fully implemented that made it illegal to sell animal-tested cosmetics in Europe, even if the testing was done outside Europe. Israel and India have followed suit and also implemented similar laws.
The Australian Government will implement a ban on cosmetic testing on animals from 1st July 2018. The USA are yet to implement a ban.

WHAT COMPANIES SELL VEGAN COSMETICS
Luckily there are many companies producing products that are vegan & cruelty-free. To help you find vegan companies we have listed many on our Resources page.

And Logical Harmony have put together an extensive list of cruelty-free brands and have highlighted the companies that are Vegan and/or sell vegan options.

There might be an initial adjustment for you to find vegan & cruelty free brands that you like but it has a big impact on the cosmetic market and creates a bigger demand for more ethical products and reduces the demand for animal cruelty. Never underestimate your buying power!

Thank you for making kinder choices.
